A septarian nodule is a sedimentary rock concretion, like a fossilized mudball, characterized by unique, angular cracks (septaria) filled with yellow calcite and brown aragonite, forming distinctive patterns often compared to dragon's skin or eggs, and they typically contain remnants of ancient sea life like ammonites. These striking geological formations are prized for home decor and jewelry, found globally, especially in Utah and Madagascar, and are essentially hollow geodes with mineral-lined cavities.
Formation Process
Nucleus: Starts with sediment gathering around decaying organic matter (like a shell or fossil) in an ancient sea bed, forming a mudball.
Cracking (Septaria): As the ocean recedes, the mudball dries, shrinks, and cracks, possibly due to gas expansion or dehydration.
Mineral Filling: Later, mineral-rich water fills these cracks, depositing calcite (yellow) and aragonite (brown) crystals
