CDだというのに、300人キャパぐらいの小バコで見据えられているような視線の強さ――80年前後生まれの仙台出身の3ピース、椿屋四重奏。2003年のミニアルバム『椿屋四重奏』リリースの頃には、はやくもエレカシやsyrup16gら、のっぴきならない対バンも多数経験した強者だ。しかし期待度No.1バンドの中でも、その密着度は突出している。
ヴォーカル、ギターで全作詞作曲を担当する中田裕二は、いわば男芸者。男の情けなさを日本的で湿気十分なメロディと、語尾までしっかりねっとり聴き手を麻痺させるほどの力量でもって歌に浸透させる。その背後には情念すら見えるほどだ。バンドサウンドがこれだけソリッドで緩急自在でなければありえないバランス。だが、敢えてそのスリルにこのバンドは身を投じるのだろう。
